Wants to make the apprentices proud to work at Mantena

30. June 2022

Good and close follow-up. That is the key to shaping the workforce of the future – the apprentices.

– Mantena is an attractive training company because the apprentices are given the opportunity for varied work tasks. They rotate through several different departments during their apprenticeship period and must learn to cooperate with various people. Mantena has extensive experience with apprentices, which enables them to take good care of them and provide excellent follow-up.

These words come from Nikolai Johansen at the Training Office for Mechanical Trades, who supervises the apprentices at Mantena’s workshop in Grorud.

Gain broad experience

HR Business Partner at Mantena, Elisabeth Grebstad Rødseth, explains that working with railways is not very well known among young people, but that it is precisely through cooperation with the various training offices and schools that this can change.

– Apprentices at Mantena gain broad experience in component maintenance. This includes wheels, bogies, freight cars, valves, and many other exciting tasks to try your hand at. The different departments have a good culture of involving the apprentices in everything that goes on in the department. When you have completed your apprenticeship at Mantena, you will therefore have a solid reference wherever your path leads, says the HR advisor.

She states that they work hard to make Mantena known as a training company. Among other things, they continually strive to be in close contact with schools and training offices to inform about career opportunities.

Good results

– We are fortunate to have many skilled future professionals with great interest in the field, says Grebstad Rødseth. The “proof” is that several of the apprentices pass the journeyman’s examination with the grade “Highly Passed;” the usual is simply “Passed.”

– I believe the good results are due to the fact that we are genuinely interested in ensuring our apprentices do their best, and that we take the responsibility of training someone seriously. Because we envision our apprentices staying with us even after their apprenticeship, the time here becomes all the more important, says Grebstad Rødseth, adding:

– Taking on apprentices is important because it brings new impulses into the company. We see that our more experienced employees appreciate the opportunity to pass on their competence. There is a culture here of being curious about new knowledge and of helping to shape young people so that they take pride in working for Mantena.
