Mantena uses the test bench in new ways to solve challenges with speed sensors.
A dynamic test bench is typically used for vibration and temperature testing on bogies. In connection with challenges related to speed sensors on train type 72, the motor department at Mantena utilized the test bench in new ways to solve the problem.
The issue began when several motors were not operating as they should. The motors were sent back and forth between the workshop and the operator without fully identifying the problem.
Interdisciplinary collaboration
Hans Olav Storsveen from the motor department at Mantena explains that it is not common practice to test only motors in a dynamic test bench, as they usually test complete bogies. However, in this case, they had to expand the measurements compared to their usual procedures in order to understand the sensor issues.
– This case is a good example of how we sometimes need to think innovatively and use existing equipment in new ways to solve a problem. Identifying the challenge with the speed sensors and solving the issue through new use of the dynamic test bench is the result of effective interdisciplinary collaboration within Mantena, including between the motor department and the technical department.
In-house expertise
System engineer Petter Lefoka is responsible for the test and measurement systems at Mantena. Together with Storsveen, he led the interdisciplinary collaboration and managed the documentation and preparation of hardware and test equipment in advance.
