Soon ready for launch in Sweden’s most modern train workshop

12. October 2020

In the autumn of 2019, it was decided that Mantena would become the total supplier for the maintenance of trains operating in Southern Sweden and the Øresund area. After an extended mobilization phase involving many new hires, planning, and testing at the new workshop, the company is now almost ready to start operations.

Among the Largest Train Maintenance Contracts in the Nordics

The Øresund contract applies for eight years, commencing mid-December 2020. In total, this involves 111 trains operating on the railway network from Copenhagen to, among other destinations, Malmö and Kalmar – an area with approximately 5 million inhabitants.

State-of-the-art Workshop

The Öresund trains will be maintained at a brand-new workshop in Hässleholm in Skåne. The workshop was completed in May this year and covers a total of 26,000 square meters, with a price tag of around SEK 1.5 billion. This has become Sweden's most modern workshop, featuring entirely new technology and equipment for service and maintenance. All conditions have been established here to enable Mantena to get trains into operation as quickly as possible.

100 New Hires

In June, SJ and Mantena received the keys to the workshop. The period leading up to the December opening is now being used to adjust and adapt facilities and processes, including testing of workshop equipment and employee training. Since the contract was signed, active recruitment has taken place. Mantena will require approximately 100 new staff members, including train technicians, troubleshooters, team leaders, shunters, warehouse staff, planners, and managers. The interest in these new positions has been enormous, resulting in the recruitment of many competent individuals—several from the local area surrounding the workshop. Together with the employees of SJ, there will be around 150 people working at Hässleholm. This makes the workshop one of the largest workplaces in the area.

– It is an exciting task to collaborate with SJ to ensure that the Öresund trains run smoothly. It is important for both those who travel and commute in Southern Sweden and between Denmark and Sweden, says Marcus Jansson, Fleet Manager at Mantena.
